Manhattan: 5th Avenue - 65th Street

Fifth Avenue, at the N.E. corner of East 65th Street, showing at that location the Temple Emanu-El, erected here in 1927 on the former site of the John Jacob Astor mansion. The photographer is viewing same from the 65th Street lateral high-way thru Central Park. This organization was formerly located at the N.E. corner of Fifth Avenue and East 43rd Street in a synagogue erected in 1868. Their earlier meetings were held in the Grand Street Court-room (1845 to 1850). Subsequently they purchased a former church on Chrystie Street and remodelled same for their purpose (1850 to 1856).
