Vestiges of New York has no accounts, no advertising, and doesn't sell or share personal data. This page explains what the site measures and which other services your browser talks to while you use it.

Usage analytics

We use PostHog to understand how the site is used and to catch errors. It records the pages you view, what you do on the map (for example, opening a location or changing the year filter), errors, and page-speed measurements.

• PostHog runs without cookies and without storing anything in your browser. Visits are counted with a one-way hash that changes every day, so we can't recognize you across days.
• Your IP address goes into that hash and is then discarded; it isn't stored.
• When you search for an address, we record only the approximate area (about 1 km), never the address you typed.
• If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track signal, the site doesn't load analytics at all.

Services your browser contacts

• OpenFreeMap serves the map tiles.
• OpenStreetMap Nominatim receives the text of your address searches, only when you search.
• Supabase serves photo details, and Cloudflare serves the photo images.
• Vercel hosts the site and keeps standard server logs.

Like any website, these services see your IP address when your browser requests something from them.

Storage on your device

If you dismiss the OldNYC app banner (shown only in some iPhone browsers), the site remembers that choice in your browser's local storage for 30 days. Nothing else is stored.
