Manhattan: 5th Avenue - 42nd Street

Fifth Avenue, north from a point slightly to the south of 42nd Street, showing a procession of electric cabs and their earlier prototypes, the horse drawn hansom, silhouetted against buildings on the east side of this thoroughfare. The photographers vantage point is in front of the old reservoir, now the site of the New York Public Library. To the left of center is the twin towered synagogue, Emanu-El. The uncompleted office structure at the S.E. corner of 45th Street was finished in 1899 and thereby dates this photo. Beyond are the spires of St. Patrick, St. Thomas, and St. Nicholas Churches. 1898-9
