Richmond: Richmond Road - Otis Avenue

(1) Richmond Road, east side, between Otis and Bryant Avenues, showing the Lookman-Taylor-Cortelyou House, a colonial home. Because of a burglary in this house, a negro suffered the first legal execution in the county. In James Butler's 1853 map it appears as the E. Taylor house; in Beers's 1874 map as Mrs. S. Barton's house. Succeeding maps from 1887 to 1907 show it to be on property belonging to O.J. Tysen. See "History-Story-Legend of the Old King's Highway" by Staten Island Antiquarian society, p. 14.
