Manhattan: Van Nest Place [Originally Van Nesa Place].

2 and 3 Van Nest Place, adjoining the N.W. corner of 4th Street. No. 2 is Congregation Darech-Amuno, organized in 1838 and rebuilt in 1917. Van Nest Place (originally Van Ness Place) is the name given in 1866 to the north side of Charles Street from 4th to Bleecker Streets. It has its own house numbers, which occupy the place formerly taken by 61-89 Charles Street, and its own street signs. The south side is still Charles Street, and embraces the even numbers 64-96 inclusive. May 30, 1929. P. L. Sperr. According to the N.Y. Times, Sunday June 7, 1936 - the nomenclature Van Nest Place will be eliminated; Charles Street incorporating same. These structures will become Nos. 53 and 55 of same; the Synagogue being No. 53.
