Manhattan: Leonard Street - Baxter Street

(1) Leonard Street, west from and including Baxter Street, showing (left), The Tombs Prison(fortress like building with tower), occupying the block from Centre to Lafayette Streets. Also shown is Baxter Street, west side, north from and including Leonard, to, but not including Franklin Streets. The south side of Leonard, from Baxter to Centre Streets, is an empty lot and is used for parking automobiles, and at the extreme right are visible trees from Columbus Park. September 24, 1927. P. L. Sperr. (2) A view at a later date, showing in addition the north side of the New York State Office Building on the south side of Leonard Street. West of same appears a portion of the new Department of Health, Hospitals and Sanitation Building. The factory buildings appearing on the right will be demolished and upon their site will rise a unit of the new Criminal Courts Building replacing the old structure and the Tombs. November 6, 1937.
