Manhattan: 20th Street (West) - 9th Avenue

West 20th Street, north side, west from Ninth Avenue, showing the General Theological Seminary. This occupies the entire block west to 10th Avenue, from 20th to 21st Streets. Established by the General Convention in 1817; it began instructions in 1819, and was incorporated in 1822. Only 2 of these buildings antedate 1880, the others having been erected later. Dr. Clement C. Moore, the author of "The Night Before Christmas" was a professor here. Inheriting this from his father, the Bishop, he gave it to the Seminary. View 3 is eastward from Tenth Avenue.
