428-34 Lafayette Street, west side, between East 4th Street and Astor Place, showing the distinctive row of houses known as the "Colonnade". This was formerly called "La Grange Terrace", in honor of General Lafayette's home. They were erected in 1827 and for a time were the home of Washington Irving and John Jacob Astor. The Churchman, the leading paper of the Protestant Episcopal Church was published here at the time when this was the center of New York's intellectual supremacy, at what was then No. 47 Lafayette Place. For a number of years this building has been occupied by the Conte Restaurant. 1938-9 Works Progress Authority Federal Writers Project
