Manhattan: 1st Ave. - 20th St. E.
First Avenue (across view from right to left, obscured by rooftops on the westerly side), from E. 20th (extreme right) to E. 23rd (extreme left) Streets, as viewed eastward from a loft structure at the S.E. corner of Second Avenue and E. 22nd Street. This area is better known as the "Gas House" because of tanks and plants of the Consolidated Edison Co. and as such produced many a Tammanyite. Most of this area was formerly under water and subsequent fills for the new East River Drive will extend the line further. Across the East River appears the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn.
