Manhattan: Madison Avenue - 26th Street (East)

Madison Avenue at 26th Street, seen from Madison Square. The house with the flagpole, on the right, was once the Lawrence Jerome residence, and is now the University Club. Later it will house the Manhattan Club. Of principal interest, however, is the new Madison Square Garden at the left. For about twenty years before its erection, the first Madison Square Garden, which was once the New York Central station, occupied the site. Work was begun on the second Garden in 1889, and it opened on June 16, 1890. The figure of Diana is of special interest. This statue, by St. Gaudens, will be removed in September, 1892, and sent to Chicago for the World's Fair. A second statue will be made by St. Gaudens and placed on the tower in 1893, where it will remain until removed for the demolition of the building in 1925. About 1890.
