Manhattan: 5th Avenue - 46th Street

Fifth Avenue, east side, north from and including 46th Street, showing the Windsor Hotel from 46th to 47th Streets. The 7-Story building on the S.E. corner of 50th Street is the Buckingham Hotel (opened 1876); and beyond it may be seen the trees on the grounds of the Catholic Orphan Asylum, from 51st to 52nd Streets, the block above the Cathedral. Compare this picture with Fifth Avenue, north from 46th Street, about 1890, which will show the ground floor of the house on the S.E. corner of 46th Street remodeled for business, and the new 8-story Belgravia on the N.E. corner of 49th Street where this picture shows a vacant lot. The spires of St. Patrick's Cathedral, begun in the fall of 1885 and finished three years later, will also rise from behind the Buckingham; in this picture only the preliminary construction work is visible. The same scene in 1906 will show the Windsor Arcade, which was built after the hotel was destroyed by fire on March 17, 1899. Late 1885. Brown Brothers. A view similar to the item referred to.
