Manhattan: Canal Street - Greenwich Street

Canal Street, south side, east from Greenwich (9th Avenue "El" thereon), to Watts (left) Streets, showing a triangular block bounded by these thoroughfares. A former 4 story structure (No. 500 Canal and 477 Greenwich Streets) has been replaced by a gasoline station and opened to view the side of a frame house No. 475 Greenwich Street. Adjacent to same is a similar 2 1/2 story frame building with brick front, bearing No. 473. Across these buildings appears lofts on the south side of Watts Street; the narrower of which is to be rebuilt and have a modern translucent glass front. For an account of same see the New York Times of October 20, 1937, page 42 L. View No. 2 shows details of the structures occupying the middle of this block front. The narrow 2 story affair at the left is a rear entrance to an addition to the aforementioned No 473 Greenwich Street. The adjoining property (No's. 496 and 498 Canal Street) is composed of 2 units; one, two stories in height and the other, one story. Note the doorway leading into the back yard of the first 2 1/2 story frame dwelling. In this instance the photographer is viewing towards Greenwich Street and upon which appear lofts on the west side of same. View No. 3 is similar to No. 1. Note at the left the absence of the 4 story brick structure and the gas station replacing same, thereby giving this front an additional vacancy. The 12 story factory at that margin replaced the 3 story pitched roof residences that appear to the left in View No. 1. P.L. Sperr J.
