Richmond: New Street - Jersey Street

1 to 5 New Street, north side, east of Jersey Street, (New Brighton) showing views across the wreckage after the buildings which occupied the site collapsed, during a heavy rainstorm on August 11, 1937. The three small dwellings were about forty or fifty years old and were built for workers of the nearby Irving silk factory (seen on the right). Nineteen people were killed in the disaster. New Street, on which the three dwellings fronted, does not appear by name on any maps of the borough; the above name and numbers appearing in the newspaper accounts of the accident. The three houses that collapsed were in the center of the row of five that took up the entire length of the street--a narrow, cobbled dead-end thoroughfare.
