Manhattan: Madison Avenue - 37th Street (East)

Madison Avenue, south from East 37th Street. At the left margin is the old J. P. Morgan residence. This was demolished for the present Library. Beyond are two brown stone houses that were subsequently replaced by an apartment building. The two story garage, the Tudoric "Percy Silver" residence, and the Church of the Incarnation remain. The row below, adjoining the dominant Cameron Building were replaced (in 1939) by the 14 story Goodhue House. Opposite same is the marble B. Altman Department Store. Outlined against the lower part of this building is a row of residences that were removed for the Combustion Engineering Building. Closer to the camera is a more individual row. Plans for an apartment house here were advanced in June of 1940. In the background, at the beginning of this thoroughfare is the dimly outlined Metropolitan tower.
