Manhattan: Edgecombe Avenue - 161st Street (West)

(1) Edgecombe Ave., at the N.W. corner of West 161st Street. The view shows the Jumel Mansion in Roger Morris Park. It was built in 1758 by Capt. Roger Morris, and became the headquarters of General Washington (1776), Sir Henry Clinton (1777), General Knyphausen (1778). Subsequent to the war it was confiscated by the State and became an Inn; known as Calumet Hall (1790), when President Washington had dinner there. John Jacob Astor sold it in 1810, to Stephen Jumel, who died in 1832. His wife, Marie died in 1865. During this interval of time it was occupied for at least a half century by Nelson Chase, who had married a Mary Bonner; niece of Mme. Jumel. About 1882, the property was sold, and General Ferdinand P. Earle was the last owner (1900). At that time it was known as "Earlcliff". The City of New York acquired it in 1901. October 1923.
