Manhattan: Whitehall Street - South Street

(1) Whitehall Street, at, adjoining and north of the N.E. corner of South Street. Also shown is South Street, at the N.E. corner of Whitehall Street. Oct 10, 1932. P. L. Sperr. (2) An earlier view of the corner building which was the former Eastern Hotel and known as such, since 1856. The original building was erected prior to 1790, when it was purchased by John B. Coles for 350 pounds. In 1822 it became the Eagle Hotel, a tavern. Much of the frame work is solid mahogany, having been imported as ballast by the original owner, a sea captain. At the time of purchase by Coles, who used it as a warehouse, it was 3-stories high. October 1923. Eugene L. Armbruster Collection.
