Manhattan: Park Avenue - 60th Street

Park Avenue, west side, south from East 61st Street, showing the 61st to 60th Street clearance and apartment buildings south of same. The photographer is on the east side of this thoroughfare and is viewing southwestward across the longitudinal parks that divide the traffic. To the left top appears the tower of the Hotel Delmonico, a structure at the N. W. corner of this avenue and E. 59th Street. View No. 3 slightly earlier and is limited to show the cleared S. W. corner of 61st Street. Note to the left here, the apartment building No. 520 Park Avenue that is absent in the other views. This was demolished to provide a site for Christ Church, M. E. Through the center appears the spire of the Hotel Sherry-Netherland on 5th Ave. The N. Y. Times of January 18, 1940 reports the proposed erection of a 19 story apartment building, to adjoin the Church, replacing the tennis courts that have long occupied the vacant corner site at E. 61st Street.
