Fort Wadsworth, United States Military Reservation (Staten Island): Shown is the main fortress guarding The Narrows, the water gate to the Upper New York Bay. The fort was named, in 1865, in honor of Brigadier General James S. Wadsworth, who was killed in the Battle of the Wilderness. The present defenses were built in 1847. P. L.
