Manhattan: West Broadway - Houston Street (West)

479, 477 West Broadway (formerly 77, 79 South Fifth Avenue), adjoining the vacant S.E. corner of Houston Street, seen from the rear. These two frame houses, which are faced with brick, probably date back to the days before Laurens Street was converted into South Fifth Avenue by widening it, at the expense of the west side, and extending it from Amity Street (West 3rd) to Washington Square South. This took place in 1870; but this type of house was being built in this part of town fifty years before then, and even earlier. June 3, 1933. P. L. Sperr.
