Manhattan: 1st Street - Avenue A

(1) 1st Street, north side, between Avenue A and First Avenue, seen from the clearing at the S.E. corner of Houston and Ludlow Streets. The small structure is a new Synagogue and the spire in the background belongs to St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church, on 2nd Street. The building in the right foreground is 222 East Houston Street. That and four more houses not shown in the picture are all that remains of a long triangular block between Houston and 1st Streets. The rest of the buildings have been demolished in constructing the new subway, as have the houses that stood on the clearing in the foreground. Neg: 2911 March 13, 1932 P.L. Sperr. (2) A closer and more restricted view of the same scene, seen from the S.W. corner of Ludlow and Houston Streets. The clearing is for a Brooklyn line of the city-owned Eighth Avenue subway.
