Brooklyn: Ave. U - Van Sicklen St.

(1) Ave. U., south side, west of Gerritsen Creek. This property dating from a grant of 1645 to Hugh Gerritsen, has been transferred by wills to the following owners: Rem Gerritsen, Garret Gerritsen, and from Samuel Gerritsen, to Johannes Gerritsen, who in 1765 left it to his son Samuel. He, in 1822, left it to his son John S. and his daughters, Jane and Elizabeth. In 1864, John Samuel Gerritsen left this farm to Samuel J., who in turn left it in 1876 to Mary C., born 1822, and Helen Van Brunt born 1824. In 1864, Samuel J., sold what he did not bequeath to his two daughters, to one Pothemus. All this property in 1879, was purchased by Helen Van Brunt (Mrs. Stephen Harriman). Her heirs conveyed it to William C. Whitney in 1899; and he restored the mill to its original condition in 1900, and vastly improved the house. The first mill was erected in 1656, this one was erected in 1831. Harry Payne Whitney was the last owner. This house and most of the out buildings are on condemned property, which is to be used for Marine Park. 1922. Eugene L. Armbruster Collection. (2) The same, the mill and house are to be demolished.
