Manhattan: 6th Avenue - 9th Street
(1) Sixth Avenue, east side, at 9th Street, showing the new West Side Savings Bank building (erected 1928) on the N.E. corner of 9th Street. It contains the entrance to the Hudson and Manhattan railroad to New Jersey. In the foreground is shown part of the old Jefferson Market Court House building and the excavation caused by demolition of the old Jefferson Market and construction of the municipal subway. On this site the new House of Detention for Women is to be built. To the right is the 8th Street Station of the Sixth Avenue Elevated Line. On the skyline in the left of the picture are 55 Fifth Avenue, the Consolidated Gas building on 14th Street east of Irving Place, and the tower of the new 40 Fifth Avenue apartment building on the S.W. corner of 11th Street. In the right background may be seen the new One Fifth Avenue apartment hotel at 8th Street, and the skeleton of the new apartment building under construction at 1 University Place, opposite the N.E. corner of Washington Square.
