Queens: Jamaica Avenue - 153rd Street

Jamaica Ave., south side, east of 153rd Street, showing in a set of three views the First Dutch Reformed Church of Jamaica. The present edifice is one of the three structures erected on this site. The first was erected in 1716 and was an octagon in shape; the second was built in 1832 and was destroyed by fire in 1857; the present one, on which construction was started in 1858, had its cornerstone laid on September 14, 1858 by Richard Brush. Dr. Thomas E. Vernilge dedicated it on October 6, 1859. This structure was erected at a cost of 20,000. October 1923. Views 2 & 3: April 1925. Eugene L. Armbruster Collection.
