(1) 1st Street, west from but not including Essex Street, to and including First Ave. Also shown is First Ave., west side, north from and including East Houston, to and including 1st Streets. The view shows the Second Ave., Elevated Station on First Ave., and 1st Street. P. L. Sperr. (2) The same, at a later date, but showing a closer and more extensive view of the north side of the street. Note the cleared area, between East 1st and East Houston (left, not seen) Streets after all the buildings were razed. The area was later developed as a park and children's playground. The demolition operations was needed to facilitate the construction of the Independent System (Eighth Ave.) Subway. P. L. Sperr.
