8th Street, west from 43 East 8th Street east of University Place, opposite the northern end of Greene Street.
The building on the S.E. corner of University Place used to be the Merck Building, erected about 1895, replacing three old residences facing 8th Street (then known as Clinton Place). West from University Place, on the south side, are old houses remodelled into apartments, owned by Sailors Snug Harbor; Beyond them towers One Fifth Avenue, on the S.E. corner, built around 1926. In the background may be seen the Sixth Avenue Elevated station, at the western end of 8th Street. In the right foreground may be seen shops of various kinds, on the north side of the street.
