Manhattan: Columbus Avenue - 60th Street
Columbus Avenue, west side, at 60th Street, showing the Church of St. Paul the Apostle on the S.W. corner of 60th Street; the view is southwest. This is the second church of the Paulist Fathers, succeeding an earlier edifice which was built around 1860. The cornerstone of this church was laid in 1873, and the church dedicated in 1885. At the time, it was supposed to be the second largest church edifice in the country. November 1, 1928. P. L. Sperr. According to the New York Times (May 15, 1938) "the group of six five-story tenement buildings comprising the northwest corner of Columbus Avenue and Sixtieth Street known as 20 to 26 Columbus Avenue and 101-105 West Sixtieth Street, will be offered at auction May 26 in the Vesey Street salesrooms." These buildings were erected in 1886 at an estimated cost of $130,000. The New York Sun of September 12, 1938, reports the demolition of Nos. 20 to 26 Columbus Ave. and No's 103 and 105 West 60th Street; forming a corner plot 100 x 100.
