East River, Queens shore, Astoria, showing the area bounded approximately by 30th Road (left) and 33rd Road. This whole waterfront area is occupied by numerous coal, gravel and stone yards and marble works. The Sohmer and Company piano factory, which is located at the S.E. corner of Vernon Boulevard and 31st Avenue, appears prominently in the center. In the center of view 3, forming a small cove, is the New York State Barge Canal Terminal. This whole waterfront area was at one time a fashionable residential area and numerous mansions, among which where those of the Stevens, Winans and Stagg families. P. L.
