Manhattan: 8th Street - Avenue D

401 and 403 East 8th Street, at and adjoining N.W. corner of Avenue D, rear view, showing tenement houses clustered around the south wall (shown on the left) of the factory at 119-21 Avenue D. The view is south in the little elbow of spaces behind 339-401 East 8th Street, part of which is shown at the right. The building in the background is the corner building, 403 East 8th Street or 115-17 Avenue D, of which the N.W. corner is pictured. About sixty families live in these two tenements. There are odors and noise all day, and frequently heavy smoke. 1923(?)
