Manhattan: Broadway - 44th Street

Broadway, east side, south from 44th Street, showing also Seventh Avenue, east side, from 44th to 40th Streets. This picture was made on Armistice Day, during the two-minute silence, and shows the Times Square crowds standing hushed, the men with bared heads, as a bugler on a balcony of the Hotel Astor sounds "Taps." Notice the campaign poster on the Hotel Cadillac for Fiorello H. La Guardia, now a member of the House of Representatives. Mr La Guardia, the Republican candidate, has just been defeated in the mayoralty election by Mayor James J. Walker, now at the height of his popularity. A year earlier the Republicans had denied renomination to him for the House of Representatives, and he made a successful campaign on the Socialist ticket. Four years later, in 1933, he will be elected Mayor of New York, defeating the incumbent, Mayor John P. O'Brien, and former Aldermanic President Joseph V. McKee. November 11, 1929.
