Cemeteries - Calvary Cemetery - Queens.

Old Calvary Cemetery, bounded on the north by Borden Ave., on the east by Laurel Hill Boulevard, on the south by Star Ave. (formerly Bradley Ave., in 1891), now (1937), by Newtown Ave., showing in a set of three views the Alsop family burial place now a part of the above named cemetery. The Alsop farm consisted of the Richard Bruntell farm and a tract of 50 acres that were patented about 1652 to Richard Colfay. Bruntell farm became the property of William Herrick and Thomas Wandell. The last named married the Herrick widow and purchased the sole ownership of the Bruntell farm in 1659. He subsequently added the Colfay tract. Richard Alsop who passed it on to his nephew Richard Alsop who passed it on to his son Richard, who in turn, passed of the land of the last named; the rest of the estate having been purchased by Peter Rapelje in 1852. John, the son of Thomas was the next owner. He died in 1837. His widow sold the farm in 1840 to the Calvary Cemetery. Eugene L. Armbruster Collection.
