Celebrations - Parades & Municipal Events: GRANT, GEN. U. S. FUNERAL Fifth Avenue, west side, from 34th to 29th Streets, showing the funeral of General U. S. Grant. The twin Astor houses are shown on the right. The northern house, belonging to John Jacob Astor, is on the S.W. corner of 34th Street; only the southeastern corner of the house is visible in this picture, with a large ailanthus tree growing alongside it just behind the garden wall. The southern house, on the N.W. corner of 33rd Street, belongs to William Waldorf Astor, who will later become a British citizen and a Viscount. In the spring of 1891 he will demolish this house and build the Waldorf Hotel (opened in March 1893). The Astoria half of the Waldorf Astoria will be built after demolition of the northern house in 1895. On the S.W. corner of 33rd Street is the Marlborough, which will be known as The Cambridge Hotel from about 1890. On the N.W. corner of 29th Street stands the Marble Collegiate Church, erected from 1851 to 1854. Adjoining it, on the S.W. corner of 30th Street, the 10-story Holland House will be built in 1891.
