(1) 36-44 and 46-8 Union Square East, from 16th to 17th Streets, showing Fourth Avenue to 19th Street. The five old residences were built about 1850; the Westmoreland apartment house was built around 1877 as a hotel. William Lloyd Garrison, the great Anti-Slavery agitator, died there; he is commemorated by a tablet on the building. This description is being written by a man who was born there. The Westmoreland, together with 44 Union Square adjoining, is about to be demolished for the new Tammany Hall building. January 23, 1928. P. L. Sperr.
