11th Street (formerly Hammond Street), south side, from Waverly Place to Seventh and Greenwich Avenues (Mulry Square): Hammond Street met the western end of the true 11th Street at that point, which was the southern end of Seventh Avenue; around 1870 it lost its own name and was renumbered as part of 11th Street. 214-08, the four brownstone-front houses shown here, are all that was left of the block on 11th Street from Waverly Place to Greenwich Avenue after Seventh Avenue South was cut through (about 1915), at the time of the construction of the Interborough West Side subway line. The old Continental Brewery, which stood on the S.W. corner of Greenwich Avenue and 11th Street, directly in the way of the subway, was demolished, and later the little one-story building, for shops, was erected to fill in the space along the new Seventh Avenue South. This picture was taken the year Prohibition was repealed; the following year the 11th Street shops shown here were taken over by a liquor store. May 20, 1933. P. L. Sperr.
