Forty-first Ave. (left) (formerly Madison Street), west from Union Street (seen in the foreground), showing St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church at the N.W. corner. This parish was started in 1826. In 1835 its pastor purchased a house on Liberty Street (later Lincoln Street) for public worship which was twice enlarged. The present structure was erected in 1854 on the site of its first frame edifice which was erected in 1841 on land purchased in the same year. The cornerstone of the present church was laid on June 24, 1854, and the church dedicated October 4, 1856.
