Queens: Metropolitan Avenue - 75th Street

Metropolitan Avenue, north side, between 78th Street (right) and 75th Street (left), showing in two views the M.E. Church of Newtown. The congregation organized in 1768 and met in a small meeting house, which was erected in 1769, and located on the west side of Dry Harbor Road, just south of Furmanville Avenue. The church edifice was erected in 1785 and rebuilt in 1836. The congregation was incorporated in 1836. The church is on the present site since 1836. In 1901 it was damaged by fire and in 1902 it was rebuilt and enlarged. It was burned again about Jan. 8, 1926. In 1929 a brick edifice occupies the site.
