Manhattan: 6th Avenue - 31st Street (West)

Sixth Avenue, north from a point between W. 31st and 32nd Streets, and across the latter to Greeley Square, showing Manhattan's famous shopping center. At the left margin are Gimbels and Saks department stores. The modern white center structure is the Herald Square Building and was erected several years ago. This site formerly was occupied by the Herald and which in turn had succeeded the old 71st Reg. Armory. To the right is the Hotel McAlpin. View No. 2 is photographed from the S.W. corner of 32nd Street and shows Greeley Square cluttered with subway building materials. The "El" structure and its 33rd Street station will be demolished in the latter part of March and Easter will see the entire Sixth Avenue "El" completely relegated to the past. February 18, 1939 P.
