Manhattan: Platt Street - Gold Street

Platt Street, north side, west from Gold to William Streets, showing a triangular building (No. 19 Gold Street) at the N.W. corner. The present structure is the remnant of a large building, part of which was demolished when Jacob Platt cut Platt Street through in 1834. In the foreground appears the lower stories of No. 23 Platt Street, at the N.E. corner of Gold Street. Note the Woodbridge Building (N.E. corner of William and Platt Streets) at the rear of the "Jack Knife" house. In 1930 this odd structure was demolished to form a portion of the present (1937) site of the Insurance Centre Building. For pictures of the latter see files for John or Gold Streets. Nos. 1 and 2 of this set of 4 views are similar; 3 and 4 being in the opposite (eastward) direction from the middle of the block. No. 4 also shows a more extensive view eastward on the north side of Platt Street, to Pearl Street where the stacks of the New York Steam Co. appears across the Pearl Street buildings.
