Manhattan: Washington Square - Washington Square West
Washington Square, seen from a roof at Sixth Avenue near 4th Street. The principal New York University building is on Washington Square East from Washington to Waverly Places. On the N.E. corner of Waverly and University Places a tall apartment building is going to be erected in 1929. The tall building north of the square is the new One Fifth Avenue. To the right may be seen the new apartment building at 32 Washington Square West, recently erected onto the site of the old Hicks-Lord house. Behind it, on the horizon, the tower of the Consolidated Gas building, Irving Place and 14th Street, is nearing completion. Nearer in the foreground are the roofs of the Holley Hotel, 35-6 Washington Square West, and the old houses 37-39, which are soon to be replaced by an apartment building. The spires in the immediate foreground belong to the Washington Square Methodist Episcopal Church at 135 West Fourth Street. Down in the park, to the right of the fountain, and nearer, may be seen the newly rebuilt comfort station. P. L. Sperr.
