Queens: Bowne Street - 37th Avenue

Bowne Street (Ave.), south from Thirty-seventh Ave. (Washington Street), showing at the left foreground opposite Thirty-seventh Ave., the old Bowne house later owned by the Parsons family. This building was erected in 1661. In 1696 it was used as a meeting place for the Society of Friends. "It is the oldest identifiable place of worship in New York City." See clipping in Room 319, New York Public Library, taken from "The Globe and Commercial Advertiser of New York" of Monday, September 26, 1921, and found in the Bowne papers. This house still stands.
