Manhattan: Platt Street - Gold Street

(1) Platt Street (left) at Gold Street (right), as seen through an excavation at the N.E. corner of same and showing a 4 story structure, No. 15 Gold Street, that housed the firm of Thomas Prosser & Son for 92 years. This firm, founded in 1845 at this site, is the American representative of the Krupp Steel Works of Germany. According to the New York Times of December 8, 1937, they will move to new quarters at No. 120 Wall Street. Upon the clearance in the foreground stands a 28 story office building, known as No. 90 John Street. The building that partially appears on the right is a new structure and is the 25 story Insurance Centre Building, No. 80 John Street. The corner shown of the latter, is the former site of the "Jack Knife" building, No. 19 Gold Street; a triangular structure that remained from a former large building when Jacob Platt cut Platt Street through in 1834.
