451 Clarkson Ave., north side, near Brooklyn Ave., showing the residence of the General Medical Superintendent of the Dept., of Public Welfare. Until 1824, each town in Kings County had cared for its own poor, but on November 27, 1824, the Board of Supervisors were empowered by an act of the legislature, to purchase land for a county farm for the poor. The poorhouse at Brooklyn, was leased, until a building was erected. In 1832, the inmates were removed from Brooklyn to Flatbush.
