Brooklyn: Cortelyou Road - Canarsie Avenue
Cortelyou Road, (Canarsie Lane), at the N.E. corner of Canarsie Ave. (Old Clove Road), showing Guard house of the Holy Cross Cemetery. This cemetery, named Galilee, was also referred to as the "Cemetery of the Catholic's". Bishop John H. Hughes acquired in June 1849, 17 acres of land from James Duffy. This land was once a section of the Van Brunt farm. In 1857, another 19 acres were purchased from the heirs of Adrian Vanderveer. In 1869, another 22 acres were purchased from Lefferts Cornell. The first body interred, July 14, 1849, was that of Thomas Moran, the first victim of the cholera in Flatbush. May 12, 1922. Eugene L. Armbruster Collection.
