Washington Ave., is east and south in front of the Arts building; also is Classon Ave., and the Manhattan Beach and Coney Island branch of the Long Island R.R. Union and President Streets, now run east and west to the left of Eastern Parkway to Institute Park. In the foreground west of Franklin Ave., now stands the Girls Commercial High School, east of Franklin Ave., on property of M. & S. Smith, large apartment houses have been built. All buildings east of the Arts building and east of Eastern Parkway, have been demolished. The corner-stone for the Institute was laid in 1896 by Mayor Charles A. Schieren. The two sections of this building were completed in 1897 and 1904. The apprentices Library Association and the Old Brooklyn Institute founded in 1823 and 1843 respectively, were incorporated, in 1890, into this organization.
