Washington Street (right), north from Johnson Street, showing the area, extending west to Liberty and Fulton Streets, which has been cleared for the construction of a wider approach to the Brooklyn Bridge and necessitated the razing of many buildings. In the lower right hand corner is part of the United States Post Office; to its left are elevated car yards of the B. M. T. system and the Fulton Street "El." In the background is the Manhattan Bridge and to its left a portion of the Brooklyn Bridge. Across the East River is the midtown Manhattan skyline.
