(1) Gay Street, north from Waverly Place. Gay Street runs only through the block from Waverly Place (originally West 6th Street) to Christopher Street, but the bend in it near the northern end, makes it impossible to see from one end to the other. Gay Street has been spoken of as the shortest street in New York, but it is not -- even Weehawken Street is shorter; however, it is probably the shortest bent street in Manhattan. September 25, 1928. The new One Christopher Street apartment house, the top of which is seen over the sevenstory loft building in the background, was erected in 1931. February 24, 1933. P. L. Sperr.
