Feast of Santa Filomena [St. Philomena].

(1) Feast of Santa Filomena (St. Philomena), 1927, No. 1. Shrine, at the S.E. corner of West Houston Street. St. Philomena, a virgin martyr (not to be confused with St. Philomena of San Severino) is very popular in Italy, but her feast is not universally celebrated. Her veneration is fairly recent, dating only from 1802, when her remains were found in a tomb in the Catacomb of Priscilla. P. L. Sperr. (2) No. 2. Tower, a temporary structure of papier mâché on a wooden skeleton, standing at the intersection of Sullivan and West Houston Streets, near the heart of the Italian colony south of Washington Square. The view is north on Sullivan Street. This tower is the same type as the one used by the Bruscianese colony in East 106th Street in their annual festival of St. Anthony of Padua, held on Labor Day. August 10, 1927. P. L. Sperr. (3) No. 3. A small, private tower, for the Feast of St. Filomena, standing at 132 West Houston Street, adjoining the N.W. corner of Sullivan Street. August 10, 1927. P.
