(1) Madison Ave., east side, from 24th to 26th Streets, seen across Madison Square from 23rd Street and Broadway. On the N.E. corner of 24th Street stands the Metropolitan Annex, which in 1920 replaced the Madison Square Presbyterian Church. The other buildings in that block date back at most to 1911. Trees hide the small houses in the next block, so that the next visible building is the New York Life Insurance Building on the N.E. corner of 26th Street, on the site of the old Garden. About 1927. P. L. Sperr. (2) The same, at a later date. The three buildings shown in the center of the view, from right to left, beginning with the one that has the white sign on it, are; the 15-story Pullman Building (No. 17 Madison Ave.); the 14-story Farragut Building (No. 19); and the 20-story Madison Ave. Building (No. 21-25), south of, adjoining and at the S.E. corner of East 25th Street. These three buildings are shown in the process of being dismantled internally, and will be completely razed, in what is considered one of the largest demolition operations undertaken in years, and is being carried out by the Metropolitan Life Insurance Co., which owns the property. No plans have been made for the immediate improvement of the land. June 9, 1937. P. L. Sperr.
