Washington Square Park, northeastern quarter and eastern side, showing 13-1 Washington Square North and all of Washington Square East. In the foreground may be seen the bust of Alexander L. Holley; in the right foreground stands the old wooden comfort station, to be replaced in a couple of years by a new stone structure. East of the fountain is the statue of Garibaldi. At the left stands Washington Arch, designed by Stanford White and completed in permanent form around 1891. The buildings shown, from right to left, are the Vischer building at 78 Washington Square East, N.E. corner of 4th Street, the former Benedick apartment house and the former Celluloid Company building, now part of New York University, on the site of the Asbury Methodist-Episcopal Church. From Washington to Waverly Places the new New York University building (about 1900), on the site of the old building, takes up the block. On Washington Square North are the old residences most of which antedate the Civil War. On the N.E. corner of University and Waverly Places, diagonally opposite the corner of the Square, a tall apartment building will be erected in 1929. About 1925. Ewing Galloway.
