Manhattan: Canal Street - Broadway

(1) Canal Street, north side, east from (No. 273) but not including Broadway and across Lafayette (Elm, at this date) Street. The 2½-story white structure, on the left is No. 271, at the head of Cortlandt Alley; midway between Broadway and Elm Street. The 6-story lofts, slightly east of same, are Nos. 267-265-261, constructed as a unit with a triangular cornice decoration. Nos 259, 257, 255 and 251 progress in the same direction; the latter being the 5-story structure at the corner (N.W.) of Elm Street. This view is a portion of a stereoscopic scene by John S. Willard of No. 269, the 4-story building bearing a "looking glass" sign. About 1876. (2) A similar scene, from a different angle, at a later date. Note the 2-story structure that replaced Nos. 259 and 257 in View No. 1. This view is slightly east of the vantage point of the preceding scene and shows a portion of the 6-story loft building bearing No. 267-261. August 3, 1937. P. L. Sperr.
