Manhattan: Canal Street - Broadway

Canal Street, north side, west from and including Broadway. Canal Street was laid out along a canal dug to empty the Fresh Water Pond, or Collect (which lay to the northwest of City Hall, roughly between the future Lafayette and Baxter, Pearl and White Streets) into the North River. Originally it began at the future Centre Street, but around 1860 was extended eastward, along the line of, and absorbing, the eastern part of Walker Street. February 12, 1928. P. L. Sperr.
